The Jefferson Armory produces historic replica artillery carriages from wood, iron and steel; we do not manufacture our own barrels. A limited number of barrels made by a foundry man in northern California are available and can be purchased with our carriages. These are cast and turned, and are sleeved with a high strength seamless steel bore liner and touch hole riser (both with at least a 1/4 wall thickness). Given the metallurgical standards adhered to today, this bore liner alone is sufficient to withstand the stress of firing with black powder. The manufacturers of Pyrodex, Hodgdon Powder Co., Inc., deliberately discontinued the production of "cannon grade" Pyrodex some years back, and are adamantly against ANY use of their product in cannons. Modern smokeless powders should never be used in a muzzle loading cannon. Because demand exceeds production, we do not sell barrels without carriages. Many of the carriages we sell are for use with barrels purchased from another source or specially built by our customers. To reduce our liability, we have decided that the barrels we sell with carriages will be delivered in non-firing condition. To accomplish this, the fuse hole has not been drilled through the bore liner tube. We require that a statement of limited liability be read and signed by our customers. This includes an agreement to not modify these barrels for shooting; however, what a customer may choose to do with one of these barrels after purchase is entirely beyond our control. I personally have used one of these barrels in competition for years and have fired more than a thousand rounds without incident. A very good source for shootable barrels is South Bend Replicas, Inc. Their half scale barrels will fit perfectly on one of my field gun carriages, producing a fine piece for display, salute and live firing with a round. They sell a beautifully illustrated catalog full of historical information, pictures of their reproduction barrels, and of original guns. You can get their phone number or reach their web site through our links page (go to contact us). LEGAL ISSUES Firearms in this country, particularly those deemed to be destructive devices, are tightly regulated by ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms). The question becomes: is a cannon a destructive device? According to Federal Regulations, a cannon that is not capable of firing fixed ammunition and manufactured on or before 1898, and replicas thereof, are antiques and not subject to the provisions of either the Gun Control Act of 1968 or the National Firearms Act of 1934. Fixed ammunition refers to a projectile and powder charge than can be loaded as a single unit. By this definition, even a percussion primed breech loader is exempt if the powder and shot are loaded separately.
