This is a good example of the Model 1841 Number One carriage mounting a Six Pounder barrel. By the time of the Civil War, this carriage was also used for both 2.9” and 3” Parrott Rifles, the 3” Ordnance Rifle, the 3.8” James Rifle, and the Twelve Pounder Field Howitzer. There was also a Model 1841 Number Two carriage which resembled the Number One, but was more heavily constructed. This could carry the Bronze Twenty Four Pounder Field Howitzer or, with minor modification, the Bronze Twelve Pounder Gun, Model 1857 (Napoleon). The similar Number Three carriage held the Bronze Thirty Two Pounder Field Howitzer, the Twelve Pounder Napoleon, or a Twenty Pounder Parrott Rifle.
