Front view of the gun in the preceding picture. Note the diameter of the barrel compared to the carriage. Howitzers are short and stocky, and fire a large projectile at a higher trajectory than a field gun, but at a shorter range. They were particularly useful in hilly terrain for lobbing shots into an adjacent valley (out of the line of sight); hence the designation as Mountain howitzer. After the civil war, these guns saw extensive use in the west with the cavalry, but were usually mounted on a smaller carriage.
